Today the enterprise blockchain community Hyperledger, part of the Linux Foundation, announced 11 new members. The organization is best known as home to open-source Hyperledger Fabric, but it supports a total of 14 projects. Amongst the new members, the highest-profile is the largest agribusiness in the world, Cargill. The company has 155,000 employees, 2018 revenues of almost $115 billion and is reportedly the biggest private company in the U.S.
Cargill already has a close relationship with Hyperledger. Alongside Intel, it helped to create the Hyperledger Grid enterprise blockchain project that targets supply chain solutions. The company is also involved in a global agribusiness consortium, referred to as ABCCD because of the names of the companies involved. Blockchain, IoT and AI will be used by the consortium to digitize processes. A year ago, Cargill also participated in an HSBC and ING blockchain trade finance pilot.
The other new general members of Hyperledger are Bitfury, Blockforce, The Elamachain Foundation, FNZ, Mindtree, big data company Splunk (market cap: $20 billion), Truffle Blockchain Group and Unbound Tech.
ConsenSys incubated Truffle is best known for creating developer tools for Ethereum smart contracts. But smart contracts written in Ethereum’s Solidity language can also be deployed on Hyperledger Fabric and Sawtooth.
“It’s rewarding to see our projects are now powering hundreds of production networks, and we are going deeper into enterprises and wider with our developments every day,” said Hyperledger Executive Director Brian Behlendorf. “The newest members add even more depth and breadth to our community, which is the driving force behind our mission of advancing open-source enterprise blockchain adoption.”
New associate members include the University of Nicosia (the first to offer degrees in blockchain) and The United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC).
